Dear NAMI member,

It was my great honor in April of this year to begin a term as President of the Board of Directors of NAMI Genesee County. My career in human services began in 1972 as a group home director for Boysville of Michigan. I left that job in 1975 to earn a master’s in social work at Wayne State University. After graduating from graduate school, I opened and operated a program for adolescents, served as the Executive Director of Camp Oakland Youth Programs, and concluded my career in residential care as the President of Rose Hill Center. During my time at Rose Hill, I served as the state president for NAMI Michigan for eight years.

The board of NAMI Genesee is a strong group of fourteen accomplished people representing nonprofits, the for-profit sector, community funders, consumers, and education. The board feels a strong desire to assist mentally ill individuals and their families. The board is committed to ensuring that support from NAMI Genesee is available and functioning.

It is a very challenging time to be in a leadership role with NAMI Genesee. A possible lack of funding from the federal government will limit services for the mentally ill. The cuts to Medicaid currently being considered would eliminate the help needed by those we serve. Our advocacy committee is working diligently through education and contacting legislators to halt the actions in Washington.

The Board of Directors is currently developing our strategic plan for the next two years. The plan will outline our goals for advocacy, fundraising, membership, education, and expanding the services that NAMI Genesee provides. It is also vital that NAMI Genesee plays a larger role in working with other non-profits.

We will expand our support of other non-profits by promoting the voice of local organizations on issues important to those we serve.

NAMI Genesee has an opportunity to demonstrate the leadership that will be necessary to assure service delivery to the mentally ill and their families. We have a clear vision of our potential as an all-volunteer organization. My goal as board President is to strengthen and build NAMI Genesee County.

Sincerely yours,
David Ballenberger
President, NAMI Genesee County
